Job Title West Lothian Jobs Fund Trainee Payroll Assistant
Service & Location West Lothian Civic Centre, Livingston
Hours/Days of Work 26 Hours per week with days and shift pattern to be confirmed
Rate of Pay WLJF Trainee Rate (6 Month Fixed Term Contract)
Purpose of the job
As a Trainee Payroll Assist you will learn how to assist in the process of calculating and disbursing salaries and wages for employees, pensioners, partner agencies approved by the Council.
Job Scope
The learn how to and be part of the team responsible for the update and maintenance of computerised payroll records. The team operates to strict audit standards and works within pre-defined practices and procedures. The application of employees Condition of Service and the Statutory Regulations governing payroll is an essential part of the team's function and the post-holder is expected to develop a working knowledge in this area.
Key Tasks
Learn how to and assist in calculating and processing sickness, maternity, paternity, adoption payments,
Learn and assist processing and reconciliation of pay runs, third party payments, reviewing exception reports, checking integrity of figures and process and non-BACS payments.
Assist updating of statutory information received from HMRC, DWP, Lothian Pension Fund and Scottish Public Pension Authority.
Learn Calculating payroll advances and adjustments.
Working with spreadsheets and other software and reporting tools.
Learn how to prepare pension documentation as required by both local government and teachers' pension schemes, and uploading the information.
Assist with and learn how to do the recording and processing verbal/email enquiries from the HR/Payroll helpline/inbox on a rotated basis referring to appropriate officer as required.
Essential
Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
Familiarity with the Data Protection Act
Strong PC and keyboard skills
Desirable
National 5 Maths C or above
Knowledge of payroll processes and statutory regulations
Knowledgeable about Inland Revenue and DSS regulations
Training
On the job training provided in addition to £500 Training Grant.
