Interview Tips

Information on good practice for before, during and after an interview.

Before the Interview

  • Dress appropriately for the interview.
  • Know where you are going and arrive on time.
  • Do your research about the company.
  • Practice your answers.
  • Turn your phone off before you go in to the building.

During the Interview

  • Introduce yourself to the interviewers and shake hands. You should give a good firm handshake.
  • Be polite.
  • Wait until you are asked to sit down.
  • Listen - Make sure you have listened to and understand the questions before you answer them. If you do not understand the question then ask the interviewer to explain it.
  • Make eye contact - you are talking to all members of the interview panel and not just the one who asked the question so you should look at them all when answering.
  • Give examples- try to link your answers to where you have shown the skills/experience they are asking about in your current job or at school.
  • Stay calm - try not to let yourself get stressed. You will perform better if you stay calm.
  • Smile.

At the End of the Interview

  • Say thank you
  • Ask a question - interviewers usually ask at the end of the interview if you have any questions. You should have a couple prepared in case the answer on of them during the interview.

After the interview

  • Write down the questions.
  • Take a note of the things that went well.
  • Note the things you would do differently next time.
