Students benefit from innovative partnership with Hilcroft Hotel

S5 students from St Kentigern's Academy are benefiting from an innovative partnership, which has been developed locally, with the Hilcroft Hotel.

The students, who are studying National 5 Hospitality Skill for Work, are benefiting from the opportunity to participate in the tailored work place experience programme.

The five-week course was developed by St Kentigern's Academy teacher Laura Grant and owner Colin Hilditch, with the goal of providing the pupils with an all-round experience of how an hotel operates.

The programme allows four pupils to attend on a rotation basis.  During the work placement each pupil benefits from working in different areas including: front of house, kitchen, house-keeping, reception and finance.

In developing the course the school liaised with the Scottish Qualification Authority to have the work placements recognised for Work Placement Level 6.  All participants on the programme should achieve N5 Hospitality Skills for Work and also Level 6 West Lothian Employability Award.

St Kentigern's Academy's Head Teacher, Andrew Sharkey, said: "We are very excited about our innovative partnership with the Hilcroft Hotel, organised by the school, as it gives our students an incredible opportunity to develop their skills in a real business environment.  It lets them learn about all aspects of the hotel trade whilst gaining nationally recognised qualifications that will enable them to move either onto further education to study the area in more depth or directly into the workplace."

Laura Grant, Teacher of Health and Food Technology, St Kentigern's Academy said: "This is a really exciting new adventure for our young people, helping to develop skills for learning, life and work."

The programme is also being supported by the council's Opportunities for All Officer and Education for Work Officer.
